Simulations and Games

How can technology, such as simulations and games, be used as a motivator in the classroom?

  1. Simulations, games and other technologies can be used as a motivator in the classroom due to the fact that there is already a familiarity between the students and some form of technology. By the students feeling familiar with the learning method this will heighten the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.

  2. Simulations allow us to “fail without risk”... Practice real life situations in a virtual environment. It allows us to check a pulse or look for dilated eyes in a patient in a controlled lab instead of a hospital room or roadside. Practice makes perfect and simulations allow the ability to do that. To experience things we would not normally be able to. I believe in technology and I'm also willing to incorporate it in my classroom. I can see how simulations work and I understand how these methods can allow us to cover materials and go to places that physically we not be able to. I also understand to need to keep our students engaged in learning and to present material from a different perspective and allow some students to tap into learning that may not have otherwise interested them. Not only that, but they can create their own games to increase their learning. Not just to play the game or simulations, but to build games and simulations for other students to learn. Thus tapping into a whole different expeience.

  3. Thinkport.com website was broken and was not showing simulations. I viewed other sites to see examples of the simulations and how they can be used in the classroom setting. There were several ones for science information and there were some for math ideas. If you are technically inclined you could create your own to use in the classroom. If you are not you can still google and try to find some that you may use depending on the subject and content you are planning. This can be very beneficial especially for things in medical that can help students with hands on information and to learn while doing.

  4. One thing that I remember from this night was what Terrance said about how video games let you fail with out it being real life. I think that is good in a medical field where playing around in a lab, or even in the electrical field, or with flying an airplane. The cons to this would be that it is not real, and you when in the real world one might think that messing up is that important, One day I would like to take a class maybe biology that is in a simualted world.
