Reflection Post for May 20, 2011

Reflect on what you have learned.  Questions to consider:

1.  What did I learn?

2.  So what does it mean to me in the context of other learning that I have done in this class or other classes?

3.  Now what am I going to do about (or with) what I have learned or experienced?

  1. In Friday evening's class, we discussed the categories or domains of learning, according to Gagné: verbal information, discrimination, concrete concept, defined concept, rule, higher order rule, cognitive strategy, motor skill and attitude.

Completing the in-class exercise wherein we classified learner behavior demonstrated to me just how closely these domains are related to one another. What I learned from that exercise is that, in writing objectives, precision is pivotal to ensure that the outcomes for students are the same outcomes I envision.

One way to help ensure clarity and alignment of intent and outcome is to use the ABCDs (or just BCDs) in writing performance objectives. Performance objectives are the observable, measurable means by which we determine if learners have comprehended and synthesized the new information and can apply it within stated conditions.

Understanding the how writing objectives directs instructional activities, which in turn affects learned capabilities, I will focus on specificity and measurability in writing objectives. And I will use objectives as the point from which the curriculum builds.

  2. Friday night, May 20, 2011 was the second evening class. We briefly covered Chapters 5, 6, & 7.Discussion was about Blooms's and Gagne's domains of learning with a brief comment on the ABCDs of performance objectives. The most outstanding point, to me, was "everything an instructor does should point to the course objectives." (I quote a summary of my own. More or less, to be a bit honest, OK?) The essence of the class is opening insights to me of how to more understandably instruct to the many different learning capabilities before a teacher. A very good night.
O yeah, in truth, Gwen has NEVER really been in rehab. Honest. (I think)

  3. Last night I learned that I am better working in a group setting and took a lot from working with my class mates. I was having a hard time before distinguishing the difference between intellectual and Cognitive but after having the group interaction with my fellow class mates and doing the exercises helped me understand the exercises.

I also enjoyed that Dr. Wright brought hand held objects for us to play with in class and music to play. This was great for me because I am 85 percent bodily kinesthetic and music was my third highest trait. I find it very hard to sit still and was amazed at how much easier I found it to pay attention since I had something to play with in my hand.

  4. I learned about Gagne's taxonomy and the nine types of learning. What I found interesting with nine types of learning is that more than one types of learning can be used with certain learning senarios.

    2. So what does it mean to me in the context of other learning that I have done in this class or other classes? It is very important to be sensitive to the different learning style(s) of a student because this reflects how the student looks at Gagne's nine types of learning .

    3. Now what am I going to do about (or with) what I have learned or experienced? Use this information while I am in class as a student as well as a future teacher. This will keep me mindful that each classmate's learner behavior may fall into a different or many categories of the nine types of learning.

  5. Last nights class very interesting. Through out the years i have always heard "oh she hit that ball good, she has good motor skills", or she read that peom well, and can speak well at such a young age", but I never knew what learning skills i was using. Last night I learned what learning skills i was using. Motor skills, verbal skills, and attitude affect what we do. I also learned that i work well with a group, adn music playing in the background helps me alot.

  6. Last night's class was another great one. We covered objectives for chapters 5, 6, & 7. The Theme for throughout last night was, "Who should our stundents be ablr to accomplish at the end of the lesson or course." I feel this is profound because it gives us direction when we compose our lesson plans. It also gives us focus while we administer the lesson. This keeps us on track and gives us a guideline for items we want to cover. It also gives us a record of things being taught so if anyone ever wants to validate what was covered in the class. We also had some very candid discussions on how to ingage our students. Students in the classroom are very different today than they were years ago. Dr. Wright asked the question, "how willing are we to confront issues with attitudes?" All of us stated we would be very comfortable about confronding attitudes that arise in class. She shared the importance of us handling situation carefully. We all understand the importance and we feels having class standards will assist us in dealing with attitudes that may come up. We talked about making things relevant to each student and that way we can try to keep the class engaged in the learning experience. Dr. Wright gave us the example by introducing several items at the beginning of class. It established an incredable atmosphere for learning.
