Reflect on what you have learned. Questions to consider:
1. What did I learn?
2. So what does it mean to me in the context of other learning that I have done in this class or other classes?
3. Now what am I going to do about (or with) what I have learned or experienced?
1. Yesterday evening, one of the things we discussed, and that I learned, was the relationship between teaching and instruction. Teaching is only a part of overall instruction.
ReplyDelete2. I am more keenly aware of effective instruction and less effective instruction in previously classes. In the past, I have sat through classes feeling not quite "settled" with the experience, yet I did not know why I was feeling that way at the time.
With gaining some insight into instructional methods, teaching / learning strategies and curriculum, I am starting to understand and be able to view those past experiences within a new context. Sometimes, classes were uncomfortable for any number of reasons: because of my own way of learning; or because the instructor's methods were focused on "teaching" as opposed to focused on the class's "learning."
Now, having written that, I would like to clarify that I do not mean to castigate the faculty to whom I am referring. I think he was as frustrated with the experience of low class grades and low class morale, but did not make the connection as to why.
3. I choose to learn from the above example and to remember to focus on the learning of others, remaining cognizant of the many different types of intelligences, as Gardner theorizes, and the kinds of learning, as described in Gagné. I will work to incorporate various methods of instruction to foster an effective learning environment. Lastly, I will be committed to self-evaluation of my methods, program and curriculum and to continuing my own education in an effort to become a more effective instructor.
1. Teaching is only a part of instruction.
ReplyDelete2. Adults tend to respond better with faciliated learning vs lecturing.
3. Instruction can be defined as " a set of events embedded in purposeful activities that facilitate learning."
4. Intentional learning is a planned/staged presentation of instruction.
5. The course will emphasize the Nine Events of Instuction (Gagne, 1985) throughout.
6. The course will emphasize the Five Kinds of Learned Capabilities throughout.
7. Each and every student learns differently.
8. Most importantly, every student must come to know that you, as an instructor, truely care about them and their learning experience with you.
9. Great instructional resource: nwlink.com
10. Instructional Systems Design (ISD) is the process of creating a focused and intentional instructional program.
11. Most ISDs follow a "staged" design system of developement, building off progressive and interconnected steps that can be implimented, evaluated and motified, as needed . The prime example is the ADDIE Model.
12. The ADDIE Model is formated as follows: Analyze, Design, Develope, Impliment and Evaluate.
13. Analyze: To determine for what problem would the ISD be the instructional solution? (to kinda paraphrase the book)
14. "The universe is larger than our views of it." Thoreau
Questions 2 & 3? Hmmmmm...
1.) Tonight was a great first night of class. Even though I had to do a job analysis with VA to select a major for college, now that I've begun my quest in the area of education, I've found a field I want to go into. Self-Enrichment Education fits what I feel is my purpose. It allows me to help people find their niche and thus lead to a fulfilling life. I have a broad scope of life experience that span many areas in education. This will allow me to tap in to my expertise and share my passion for learning with others on a more personal level.
ReplyDeleteThe things shared so far in the class mirror things I learned when I took PSYC 3110 Educational Psycology. We covered Bloom's Taxonomy and things of that nuture. We also learned how to prepare lesson plans.
I plan to build on what I gained last night. I can already see how it comes together. Theses are all things we will need to embrace as teachers. It also gives us a fresh approach to how to relate with students.
I learned that there are many processes and designs for learning. Not one design fits every every individual, but information can be tailored to influence specific learning. All facts and theories are not pertinent to every discipline and this class is providing us with the tools to construct the proper filters for learning. I plan to take the knowledge I have acquired and build formats that are clear, easy to read and understand, relevant, and constantly evolving with the trade of electrical installations.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed our first night of class.
I learned that as a technical eduaction instructor it is very important that you develop lesson plans that meet the standards of the program you are teaching. These standards must meet the state and national curriculm guidelines for that program you are teaching. It is important to set lesson plans to make sure you remain on task with your teaching and to keep the students on goal as well so they will be successful in thier career field. I really like the first quote of the book "The purpose of instruction is to help people learn." What a powerful statement to make and it is one that as a future teacher I will hold dearly to my heart! What I will do, in the future with what I have learned is if I do acquire a teaching position (which is one of my goals) is plan and write out detailed lesson plans and follow thoroughly to ensure that my students successfully complete thier goals and are successful in the workforce.
In class today I learned that I am the strongest in Bodily and kinesthetic, followed by interpersonal for my multiple intelligence. I definetley agree with this because I am a hands on person and thats why I am more in the technical sector of the workfield. Also we learned the ADDIE model which stands for analysis, design, devolpment, implemetation, and evaluation. This model is a great approach to instruct the learners needs. I like how the Addie model is a design process where the results of each phase leas the back to the previous phase and the end product of one phase is the starting product of the next phase. Having the assessments and being able to try things out and identify problems, record time data, intrepret test results, develop flow charts, etc are all part of real life issues and how things work and this is what I would teach my students to follow. I think the Addie model and the steps and sample tasks within it are excellent and this would be taught within my curriculm. I also wiould have my students take the basic multiple intelligence test to see what thier strengths and weaknesses are so I would know the best ways to get through to them and what works best for them.
ReplyDeleteLast night was a great night in class. I learned how to do an application and also what all it entails to be a cosmetology teacher. Most technical programs require state liscences. I leatned that adult learners have several different ways of learning, and there is no "cookie cutter way" of teaching, because each student is different. I have known all along that I love music, when I walk into a store, and the first thing I notice is what song is playing, that is actually a learning technic. I learned something about myself, and that was very interesting.I have learned and will do differently maybe playing music in the background, and see where that takes me as far as learning.
ReplyDeleteI learned that there is a broader field of teaching on the technical level. Escpeciallly pertaining to Culinary Arts.
ReplyDelete2. So what does it mean to me in the context of other learning that I have done in this class or other classes? That it is important to make the information relevant and practical to the students, and this will allow the students to see a correlation between the workforce pretaining to their major and the learned content.
3. Now what am I going to do about (or with) what I have learned or experienced? Apply this to my daily life and my future students learning process.
Last night's class was another great one. We covered objectives for chapters 5, 6, & 7. The Theme for throughout last night was, "Who should our stundents be ablr to accomplish at the end of the lesson or course." I feel this is profound because it gives us direction when we compose our lesson plans. It also gives us focus while we administer the lesson. This keeps us on track and gives us a guideline for items we want to cover. It also gives us a record of things being taught so if anyone ever wants to validate what was covered in the class. We also had some very candid discussions on how to ingage our students. Students in the classroom are very different today than they were years ago. Dr. Wright asked the question, "how willing are we to confront issues with attitudes?" All of us stated we would be very comfortable about confronding attitudes that arise in class. She shared the importance of us handling situation carefully. We all understand the importance and we feels having class standards will assist us in dealing with attitudes that may come up. We talked about making things relevant to each student and that way we can try to keep the class engaged in the learning experience. Dr. Wright gave us the example by introducing several items at the beginning of class. It established an incredable atmosphere for learning.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that we are being instructed in the art of human design is one of the most captivating experiences I'll ever have in a lifetime. Being able to understand and assess a need takes far more than just book knowledge. The people we will be most likely to help will be those that are open to the help and we have to administer that help in a manner that is both strategic and relevant. Everyone has an attitude, beit positive or negative. Since that's a given, we as designers must be able to provide the essential tools and structure the learning conditions so that the highest degree of succesful learning can be met, regardless of predisposition.
ReplyDeleteI apologize that I am not present for this class but currently on a six month deployment. I have read your posts and found that I am missing a very intesting class this semester.
ReplyDeleteI have been back in school for the past year and I am fascinated by the people that I have met. So when it comes to learning I believe it comes not only from the instructor but also the students. The ACED classes come with so much experience and life lessons that it's impossible not to take something from each and every class.
I also believe that lesson plans are guides and not something that should be taught word for word. All classes are different and we should adjust to that partiicular audience. Every student learns at a different capacity and style, this is what we must find to execute a quality lesson plan.
